Animals in the workplace

It is becoming increasingly common for animals, namely dogs, to be brought into the workplace. Whilst there is no specific legislation regarding bringing animals into the workplace, the Health and Safety at Work etc Act requires employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare, so far as reasonably practicable of all employees.

To ensure the entire workforce and the animal remains happy, everyone within should be consulted prior to allowing any animals into the workplace, not all people are pet lovers and allergies can already be in existence.

Once permission has been granted to allow pets into the office, checks should be made to ensure valid insurance including legal expenses is in place should the unthinkable happen.

Suitable arrangements and facilities must also be in place for the disposal of animal waste.

On the whole having animals in the workplace can have a positive effect on wellbeing as long as everyone is in agreement.
