Manual Handling
During 2022/23 an estimated 477,000 workers suffered from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, with manual handling being a significant contributing factor. These statistics issued by the Health and Safety Executive highlight that incorrect manual handling remains responsible for over a third of all workplace injuries.
Common injuries from incorrect manual handling can include shoulder, arm, hand and leg injuries with the most frequent being an injury to the back. Repeated manual handling without proper techniques or equipment can lead to chronic conditions causing long-term pain and disability.
Regulations state that employers have a legal responsibility to provide adequate training for those who perform manual handling tasks in their day-to-day roles. By implementing appropriate measures and training, employers can significantly reduce the occurrence of manual handling injuries enhancing workplace safety, productivity and working days lost.
