Guards

Accidents due to unsuitable and unsafe equipment have been the cause of a number of HSE prosecutions. A tobacco manufacturer has been recently ordered to pay £32,000 for failing to prevent access to the rotating blades of a ribbon blade mixer. The HSE found that employees of Honeyrose Products Ltd, based in Ipswich, were able to access the machine while it was operating, presenting a risk of serious personal injury from an employee's body coming into contact with the rotating blade. An investigation found that Honeyrose Products Limited failed to put appropriate measures in place to ensure that access to the dangerous parts of machinery was prevented. Unguarded machinery poses a significant risk of injury to users. Moving parts such as gears, belts, blades, and other components can cause severe injuries such as cuts, amputations, crush injuries, or even death if workers come into contact with them. Machinery must not be used without suitable guarding in place and safe systems of work. Should you need assistance in completing risk assessments and method statements please get in contact.
